The technology industry is seeing an uptick in available tech jobs as we delve further into the digital age. We’re now spending more and more time on our phones and computers as technology is literally in the palm of our hands. With so much of our lives wrapped up in technology, it’s no wonder more and more people are looking at breaking into the tech field. Front-end developers are some of the most in-demand roles when it comes to careers in technology. If you’re interested in a career in the tech field, we’re breaking down what a digital front-end developer position looks like at Progressive.

What is a digital front-end developer?

A front-end developer is a person that implements designs through coding languages. The three main coding languages front-end developers use are HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Most front-end developers work on display ads with animation as well as external-facing websites. If you’ve ever been interested in how pushing a specific button works on your favorite website, chances are a front-end developer created the code to produce the outcome of you pressing that button. Front-end developers also make sure that the design you see on a website carries over to a mobile site.

What does a digital front-end developer do at Progressive?

A digital front-end developer at Progressive focuses primarily on taking business requirements and design and turning it into code. Those codes are then used to build new modules and pages on our progressive.com website. Digital front-end developers also build display ads with everyone’s favorite insurance icon, Flo. Front-end developers also spend time browser testing—they make sure that the codes they create for Progressive’s website work correctly when a button or link is clicked.

What is the most challenging part of the job?

Much like any job, there can be challenges in a career in tech. The ability to manage your time is one of the most important abilities to possess. Juggling multiple projects with time sensitive deadlines is one of the most challenging parts of any front-end development position. Front-end developers often partner with our Marketing team here at Progressive. Changes in Marketing happen very fast, so if being able to effectively manage your time and prioritize projects is not your strong point, seeking a role as a digital front-end developer could be a challenge.

What are the highlights of the job?

How to break into the IT field or make a career change

If you’re looking to break into the IT field, start by researching and identifying where your interests and passions lie. That could include web development, mobile development, or back-end development. Once you’ve figured out the technology that excites you, take the time to learn more through tutorials, side projects, or attend a boot camp. If going back to school to obtain a computer science degree is an option, go for it. The path you take is dependent on where you are in life and what makes the most sense for you to be successful.
