Ask a Recruiter: How to be confident in an interview

In this episode, we asked a Progressive recruiter for their tips on being confident in an interview. Here’s what they had to say.

Given that I’ve spent 17 of my 26 years with Progressive in Recruiting, I’ve seen it all when it comes to interviewing.

As recruiters, we get it … interviewing can be stressful. And even when you feel ready, it’s easy to get nervous. To help, here are my top 10 tips on how to be confident in an interview.

10. Know the interview style: Ask your recruiter which method the company uses beforehand so you can practice accordingly. For example, Progressive uses the STAR format (also known as Behavioral Interviewing).

9. Do your homework: Learn about the company, their core values, and the work that you’ll be doing. This will go a long way in showing during your interview that you feel a connection with the company and that your skillset matches the job.

8. Come with thought-provoking questions: It’s a given that the interviewer will ask you if you have any questions. So show that you’re already thinking about the work that you’ll be doing by coming to the interview with at least two questions about the job that go beyond “yes” or “no” answers.

7. Dress for success: It’s amazing how your clothes can affect your state of mind. Even if your interview is over the phone and not a video call, wearing professional clothing can help you approach your interview in a professional way.

6. Make sure your technology works: If you’re interviewing virtually, test your equipment in advance. Nothing will fray your nerves more than misbehaving technology minutes before an interview.

5. Double-check your invite: It’s so important that you’re absolutely sure of the date and the time of your interview. Missing your interview is not the first impression you want to make.

4. Be on time: Similarly, being prompt is also a good sign to the recruiter. Be ready to go even a few minutes early so that you don’t feel rushed.

3. Use “I” not “we” statements: It’s common during STAR interviews for people to answer questions by stating “we did this” or “we helped with that.” However, recruiters want to know what you did. Tell us about the impact you specifically made by using “I” statements.

2. Eliminate distractions: Do whatever it takes to make sure that you’re in a distraction-free zone. If you can’t find a quiet hour for an interview, your recruiter might think that you can’t carve out a full day’s worth of distraction-free time to get your work done.

1. Take a deep breath: Remember, the purpose of your interview is to get to know you and your experience that you bring to the role. And we’re rooting for you! Try your best to simply relax and be yourself.
