Justin:

So as a digital designer, not only is the aesthetic and the brand that we’re portraying to the customers super important, but so is our thought process behind it. What are we using and how are we improving every day to really make the site better for the users?

David:

For the development side, we’re constantly trying to innovate, making it easier to maintain. There’s always something new, a new project that we can start on. And it’s pretty cool to know what we work on is kind of like the front door side of progressive.com.

Justin:

We’ll start off with concepting and think about how the customer is going to view the website—where we want them to go, what we want them to interact with.

David:

We’ll then step in, start wireframing, putting into code. And then when they’re completely done with the design, then we’ll start putting in the final touches on it.

Justin:

Say we come up with a design, and it may take 100 hours to develop. David could come back to me and say, “Hey if we just flip these things around or do this or do that,” it may shave 20 hours off which is obviously more cost-effective and we can get something similar. The way we’re able to collaborate with each other, our job kind of relies upon that.

David:

Some of the overlap we have, which I also enjoy coming from a technical background … we get to mess around with the interactions and the animations and stuff. It’s fun to get a little bit of that creative freedom, which is something that I didn’t expect.

Justin:

Yeah I think one thing that I really love about the company is the training available to us to help you. Say I want to become a front-end developer. There’s classes for that! I could start picking that up internally, on work hours!

David:

I was over-the-moon pleasantly surprised how hard-working everyone was, yet really laid-back and realizing that there needs to be a work-life balance. It’s just a really exciting experience … everyone’s trying their hardest to strive for the common goal of bettering the company and having a fun day while doing it.

Justin:

Obviously as a designer you want as many people to see your work as possible. So just being a Fortune 100 company, you know the work you do is going to be seen by millions of people. When people tend to think of insurance, leading in design and technology aren’t top of mind. But we definitely want to push the boundaries of design and development outside of our industry and just become a leader in general across the board.
